As you get older, you begin to realise just how many people pass through a person’s life. Some are no more than passing acquaintances, some we fall in love with, and some become really good friends. Sadly, though, there are also those people we meet who let us down, or hurt us. One thing is for certain, though, life would be pretty dull without all those different charterers passing through our lives. So, as we begin yet another New Year, let’s take a look at some of the types of friends that everyone will meet at some point in their lives.
1. The easy going friend
These are my favourite types of friends in many ways. These are the people who seem to hover around the edges of your life, without being too demanding. They are the types of people that you could call on the off-chance and go out with for a beer but, equally, they won’t be offended if you don’t call them. Sure, you wouldn’t call them your closest friend ever, but, then again, they don’t ask for any commitment on your part either.
2. The way too clingy friend
The flip side to the easy going friend is the, much dreaded, way too clingy friend. This is the friend who starts calling you every night and expects you to drop everything straight away. It’s also the friend that will come around for a drink and bring his overnight bag! This type of friend isn’t someone you never want to see again, or that you want to offend; you just don’t want to see them every single night and you wish that would understand that.
3. The friend you don’t see from one year to the next
Then, there are the friends that you can be close to that you don’t see very often at all but that somehow still remain good friends. This is the type of person that you might bump into, out of the blue, and then spend the next five hours talking to. Then, they might disappear from your life again, until the next time.
4. The cool headed advisor friend
This type of friend may be the one that is the life and soul of the party, but you know that you can trust them in a crisis. This is the type of person that you can go to for advice and you now that the advice will be sound. You also know that they are not just going to tell you what you want to hear.
5. The school friends that you never saw again
Childhood friends have a special place in most people’s memories, even though most of us never see them again after the last day of school. You could always go to a school reunion and catch up with them again, but, perhaps, that would spoil all those good memories.
6. The hear today gone tomorrow friends
Sometimes, you meet someone who becomes a good friend who then disappears from your life, just as quickly they entered it. Even if they didn’t hang around for long, these people can still be special and they can be an important part of your life.
7. The friends that use you
Unfortunately, we will all meet the friends that always want something from you, but never give anything in return. They say that a friend in need is a friend indeed, but there are limits! There are also the friends that only stay your friend so long as they need you. These are the friends that you can really do without but are hard to avoid.
8. The friends that you wish were more than just friends
Have you ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn’t have fallen in love with? You know the type of friend I’m talking about here. This is the friend that, had you met at a different time in your life, would have been much more than merely a friend.
9. The been there, seen, it, done it, friend
This type friend can reel you in with their tales of their exploits and then become extremely tiresome. They need to be the centre of attention all the time and they will always be grabbing the limelight. On their own, they can be great fun, but get them in a crowd, and they are a nightmare. You can go out for a drink with a friend like this, and find yourself sitting in a corner on your own, while your friend plays to the crowd and talks to some complete strangers.
10. The friends that are true friends
Once in a while, if you are really lucky, you will meet a friend who becomes like a brother or sister to you. These are the friends that ask absolutely nothing from you, but will always be there for you for when you need them. There are no lies, no pretence and no pressures with these friends. These are the friends to be cherished.
