£500 will buy you a perfectly good laptop

Decide on your budget

The price that you pay for a laptop can vary considerably. You could spend as little as £200 or as much as £2,000 on a new laptop in 2017.

At the lowest end of the price range, you will find Chromebooks, which run on Google’s Chrome operating system. Chromebooks tend to have limited storage space and fairly low specs. They are designed primarily for online use. They are cheap, lightweight but they do lack the functionality and power of a full-blown laptop.

At around the £500 price range, you are probably looking at a laptop that has an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of Ram and a 500GB hard drive. You might find that the screen won’t be the best possible and the battery life will probably be limited. However, you can get some perfectly respectable laptops for under £500.

As you go up the through the price brackets towards £1,000, you will find that memory, storage space, speed and screen resolution will increase incrementally. The more you pay the higher spec and the better the quality finish of the laptop will be as well.

At prices in the region of £1,000 and above, you will be getting high spec gaming machines or portable workstations. They will be more portable and more powerful, and the screen resolution will be a lot higher.

Don’t forget about the battery life

If you always intend to use your laptop at a desk and near to a power outlet, then battery life isn’t going to be quite so important, but if you want to use it “on-the-go” then you really should be looking for a laptop that has at least six hours of battery life. It’s also a good idea to check customer reviews for comments on battery life, because what manufacturers say in their sales literature can’t always be relied on.

Laptops can vary considerably in weight

Think about portability

Believe it or not, not all laptops are as portable as others are. There is always a bit of a trade-off between weight and portability and the size of the screen and the keyboard. Ideally, for easy reading, a laptop screen should be about 13 inches. And the keyboard should be large enough to sit at and type comfortably. In terms of weight, if you will be carrying your laptop around a lot, 2kg will probably be about as heavy as you would want a laptop to be.

Decide on a platform; Chrome, Window or Mac?

The question of whether you go with a Mac or Windows laptop really is one of personal preference and which of the operating systems you are familiar with. Both operate in a similar fashion and both have their own virtual assistant. The one big difference is that, currently, Mac laptops don’t support a touch screen. The Chrome operating system, on the other hand, is a different thing altogether from the other two. The Chrome operating system is like a cut down version of windows designed for use on Chrome books. It has less functionality than the Mac or Windows operating system and it is really designed to be used online.

Tablet, Laptop, or both?

Do you want a 2-in-1 or a standard laptop?

There are a lot of laptops on the market that are called 2-in-1 laptops, which can be used in tablet mode as well as a conventional laptop. If you don’t expect to be using your laptop as a tablet very often, you will usually find that you will get a better machine for your money if you just stick to traditional “clam-shell” style laptop.

Which Brand?

While laptops don’t develop faults as frequently as they used to, it does still happen, which is why it is advisable to buy your laptop from form a well-known, reputable manufacturer. Doing so will provide you with better support and a better warranty on your laptop. Most people rate Apple, Dell, HP and Samsung as being among the best laptop manufacturers.
